Lancashire Energy HQ is a £10.7m dedicated education and training facility and is the flagship development on Blackpool Airport’s Enterprise Zone.  It offers a wide range of energy-related training for future employment in the industry as well as opportunities for those already working in the sector to renew their industry accreditation and licences.  Industry partners also have the opportunity to utilise the facility to further develop their workforce.

Fittingly, the launch event for Lancashire Energy HQ was held during National Apprenticeship Week and the National Year of Engineering.

Education and local authority leaders have come together in Blackpool to create a bold partnership to explore new innovations to increase and improve skills in the health and social care sector and thus enhance the wellbeing of local residents.

New alliance to drive improvements in health – Blackpool and the Fylde College

Representatives from Lancaster University, Blackpool Council and Blackpool and The Fylde College (B&FC) came together at the College’s University Centre in Blackpool this week to sign a formal Memorandum of Understanding to drive the alliance forward.

The alliance brings together the expertise and knowledge of the three organisations to create innovative solutions and improve skills in the health and social care sector and thus will enhance the health of the local population, reducing health inequities among population groups, while driving economic growth.

By combining research, training and education and service delivery the new partnership will act as a catalyst for improved health outcomes.

Education and health and social care industry partners have come together to launch a ground-breaking new career academy, to mark this year’s World Health Day.

The strategic partnership brings together extensive industry expertise, led by NHS Blackpool Teaching Hospitals Foundation Trust, Blackpool Council and Blackpool and The Fylde College (B&FC).

Programmes have been co-created by health and social care providers and educationalists to deliver the exact skills needed for new professionals or current staff wishing to advance their career.

The academy offers learning opportunities from short professional development courses and career taster sessions through to degrees and Master’s degrees. Apprenticeship opportunities are also available with employers.

As an employer-led academy, programmes will also provide students with unparalleled work placements as part of their education.

Lancashire Energy HQ students visit Heysham Power Station

Students from Blackpool and The Fylde College’s Lancashire Energy HQ were given the opportunity to see energy in action during a visit to Heysham Nuclear Power Station.

Lancashire Energy HQ students visit Heysham Power Station

The Renewable Energy Engineering students were shown around Heysham 2 to help them understand how the theory they have learnt in the classroom is put into practice.

Representatives from EDF Energy spoke to the students about how electricity is generated using nuclear energy and how various engineering and construction disciplines work together to build, maintain and run a facility as complex as a power station.

The team also highlighted the importance of getting the right qualifications while at college and what sort of jobs and further training opportunities are available.

David Underdown, who is studying Renewable Energy Engineering at the new Lancashire Energy HQ, said: “We really enjoyed the visit and were really impressed with the facility. It certainly gave me a good insight into some of the job options I can pursue once I complete my course.”

During their tour of Heysham 2, the students were shown the nuclear reactor and the massive steam turbines used to generate enough low carbon electricity to power two million homes.

Iftikhar Bokhari, Curriculum Leader in Renewable Energy Engineering at B&FC, said: “We are committed to helping students to better understand that what they learn in the classroom has a real application in industry. Visits like these also allow them to explore opportunities for their future development. The College continues to maintain working relationships with industry partners, such as EDF Energy, to offer our students the best options for the future.”

Mandy Pritchard, Head of Lancashire Energy HQ, added: “We firmly believe students should get out of the classroom and see how what they have learnt is put into action. In fact, one of our key targets is ensuring students do meaningful work placements in industry as part of their programmes. I know our students got a lot out of this visit and we’re currently looking at other energy sectors they can spend time in to get a picture of how the theory they are learning works in the real world.”

John Munro, station director at Heysham 2, said he hoped the visit also gave students a better insight into future career opportunities in the industry. He added: “It was great to see the students out on the plant seeing what we do here at the power station. Since opening the Visitor Centre in 2013 we have seen around 20,000 people coming through our doors, many looking at potential career opportunities at the two stations. Hopefully some of those students from Blackpool and The Fylde College will be applying to join our apprenticeship scheme in the autumn.”

The new Blackpool and The Fylde College £10.7m Lancashire Energy HQ opened in September 2017 on the Blackpool Airport Enterprise Zone.

Blackpool – a town on the up

Blackpool is already Europe’s most visited tourist resort. Thanks to a multi-million pound programme of regeneration, its fortunes are set to rise even higher.

Exciting projects such as the contemporary new seafront and stunning town-centre piazza have re-injected the town with a dose of ‘urban chic’ not experienced since its Victorian hey-day. Even so, it’s still one of the most affordable places to live and work in the UK.

Continuous improvement

We’re committed to raising educational standards and aspirations not just locally but throughout the whole of the FE sector. We do this through initiatives such as the National Challenge Trust (where we contribute to quality improvement at local high schools) and the 157 Group (sharing best practice nationally to raise the quality of further education). We constantly review and update our curriculum and resource research projects designed to improve the student experience.

2017 Event celebrates B&FC’s 125-year history

Blackpool and The Fylde College staff gathered together in 2017 to celebrate 125 years of providing education on the Fylde Coast.

Celebrating 125 years at Blackpool and the Fylde College

During the event, an historic timeline was unveiled in the mezzanine at B&FC’s Bispham Campus by Principal Bev Robinson and the College’s longest serving staff member, David Ogden (below).

Celebrating 125 years at Blackpool and the Fylde College

B&FC is one of the Fylde Coast’s biggest employers with more than 1,000 staff and a photograph taken during the event will feature in a new history book commissioned by the College which will be launched later in the year during one of a number of 125 celebration events which are planned.

Engineering lecturer David, who is this year himself celebrating a 60-year involvement with the College as a student and staff member, said: “I am delighted to be part of the 125 celebrations. I started here as a student in 1957, doing an HNC in Engineering. When I completed the course, the Head of Engineering suggested I apply for a teaching vacancy, which I did.

“I got the job and started work here in 1963 as a lecturer in Electrical Installation then, when the College started working with Lancaster University, I began teaching Advanced Engineering. I haven’t missed a September start either as a student or member of staff since 1957. I now work part-time in Construction, Engineering and at Fleetwood Nautical Campus and have also had the opportunity to work overseas for the College, in places such as Brunei, Egypt, Ethiopia and Thailand.

“My most memorable moment at the College was moving into the Bispham Campus when it was built, the facilities and equipment were wonderful – something which recently continued with the opening of the new Advanced Technology Centre.”

England’s most successful general FE college

Tracing its roots back to the opening of a small School for Fisherman in Fleetwood in 1892, B&FC has gone on to become England’s most successful large general further education college.

The College also offers more than 60 degrees and was last year awarded Foundation Degree Awarding Powers. It specialises in sectors including aerospace, engineering, energy, maritime, digital, health, project management and tourism.

At last review, Blackpool and The Fylde College’s higher education provision received more commendations than any other institution in the UK from the Quality Assurance Agency and the College won the Queen’s Anniversary Prize for Higher and Further Education 2015 for its work with BAE Systems.

Alyce Wynne, Students’ Union HE President at the College, added: “The 125th anniversary is a great opportunity for students to join with staff to celebrate all that is good about our College.

“I believe students have a real pride in where they study and the Students’ Union tries to help build that feeling of a college community.

“I’m sure all the students will be keen to get involved in the 125th anniversary to help celebrate our history, while also looking forward to the future.”

More than 1,800 businesses – including Ford, BAE Systems, Jaguar Land Rover and the NHS – choose B&FC to deliver education and training programmes and are an important part of the College’s ongoing story.
